Renown former Oregon Pinot Noir vintner Dick Erath has just launched his first Arizona red wine, produced from the vineyards of the Kansas settlement area of southeast Arizona. The wine, named Cimarron Monsoon Red, is from the 2008 growing season and is a blend of several grape varieties including Barbera, Sangiovese, Zinfandel and Primitivo. According to Dick (and my palate as well), this is a wine to consume near term. It is light, fruity, with nice acidity and is bottled with a screw cap. This is only the first of several wines to come from Dick so stay tuned.

I tried this wine for the 1st time today. I will be selling it at my work and can say that I am proud to. The nose was light and refreshing, esp. for such a large blend. Aromas include first minerals and following blackberry with hints of citrus. The taste is extremely light on the first taste. Peppery spices arrive to the tastebuds quite suddenly however with light acidity. This wine brings to the table a bold statement of contemporary taste that stands the test.
I tasted this wine at a cooperative tasting at Crumbled Rock winery on 10/23/09. It has a bold presence, good balance, medium tannins. Would go great with grilled meats, strong cheeses, and zesty tomato sauces. An amazing representation of what a skilled winemaker can do in the Arizona desert. Great job!
