Wine With Summer Fruit Based Desserts: Part II

Palate & PairingNectarines/Peaches: Demi-Sec Champagne, Sparkling Wine, Late Harvest Riesling, Muscat, Moscato d’Asti, ice wine

Oranges: Orange Muscat/Moscato d’Asti, German (Late Harvest) Riesling, Champagne, Sparkling Wine, Gewurztraminer, Sauternes, Tokaji, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Sherry

Papaya:  Not one of my favorites for wine pairing; Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Late Harvest wine, Riesling

Passion Fruit: Late Harvest wines, Champagne

Pear:  Considering the sweetness of the fruit, think sweet wine such as Late Harvest Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Sauternes, Muscat and ice wine.  Demi-Sec Champagne and Sparkling wine works but not as ideally.  Finally, consider Banyuls, especially if the fruit is prepared in red wine.

Pineapple:  Late Harvest Riesling/Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, Sauternes, Vin Santo, Gewurztraminer

Plums:  On the red side consider a Port (Ruby or Vintage); on the white side think a sweet, late harvest Riesling; Muscat, Asti, Banyuls, ice wine; for something different, consider a late harvest (sweet) Zinfandel.

Pomegranate: Riesling, Sauternes, Sauvignon Blanc

Prune: Banyuls, Madeira, Tawny Port, Sherry

Pumpkin: for desserts, got to love Madeira, Tawny Port or a Sweet or Oloroso Sherry;  if you are determined to drink white make it a sweet Semillon or perhaps a Tokaji.

Raspberry:

Fruit:  Champagne or Sparkling Wine, Off Dry-Late Harvest Riesling, Muscat or Moscato d’Asti, Sauternes; Beaujolais or sparkling shiraz

Dessert: Rose or Demi-Sec Champagne, Sparkling Wine, Late Harvest Riesling are tops!  Also consider the choices for simply fruit.

Strawberries:

Fruit:  Champagne (Rose or Demi-sec), Sparkling Wine, Muscat or Moscato d’Asti, Port, off dry-sweet Riesling, Ice Wine

Cream based: Sauternes, Late Harvest Semillon

Watermelon:  Champagne (rose or demi-sec), Riesling (Kabinett)
