A South Africa Trio From the Ernie Els Portfolio

While Ernie Els is best known for his stardom as a PGA golfer, many are unaware of his success as a partner in the South Africa portfolio Ernie Els wines.  His classic Bordeaux blend, reviewed below, has achieved outstanding ratings in every vintage by national and international wine experts since its first release in 2000.  Ernie’s portfolio of wines range from the very affordable, entry level wines to his special Stellenbosch Bordeaux blend.

Guardian Peak Frontier, 2008:

A blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Shiraz and 16% Merlot, this primarily Stellenbosch wine offers up lovely medium raspberry color with aromas of fresh red and black fruit and a hint of chocolate and leather; finishes with smooth, light tannins.  Well balanced and enjoyable now or over the next year or two.  ~$20

Engelbrecht Els Proprietor’s Blend, Stellenbosch, 2007:

Made from a blend of six grapes, 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Shiraz, 7% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec  and 5% Petit Verdot, this complex wine is deep plum in color with blackberry and blueberry aromas and some classic Cab scents of tobacco and leather; nicely integrated spice rounds out this solid and well balanced wine that is drinkable now but has the personality to age for a few years. ~$35

Ernie Els Stellenbosch, 2005:

This is the classic 5 grape Bordeaux blend with 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 5% Malbec, and 5% Cabernet Franc.  In the glass, the wine takes on a deep plum appearance at the core with a rich deep red rim;  aromas and flavors of red and black plum, dark cherry and blackberry and a well integrated and lengthy oaky spice.  Smooth tannins round out this lovely wine which can be enjoyed now or age for the next 3-5 years……runs around $100.
