I’ve been fortunate, recently, to enjoy some outstanding wines, one courtesy of a vintner wine dinner, one pairing at a top Tucson restaurant and two around our home dinner table. Sometimes, all the ducks line up and yield a winning combination.
We attended a wine pairing dinner last week at Anthony’s in the Catalinas in Tucson (www.anthonycatalinas.com), one of the city’s top restaurants, featuring a lineup of vintage 2010 wines from the renown Mollydooker estate (www.mollydooker.com) from South Australia and presented by none other than co-owner Sparky Marquis. With family responsibilities tugging at her, his wife Sarah couldn’t make this trip. Look for our upcoming written and video segments with Sparky. Meanwhile, here are a couple of wines to savor over. And fear not, keep an eye out for our tastings of the revered Carnival of Love and the simply incredible Velvet Glove.
On the heels of still another great “Dr. Dave” wine tasting with friends in Italy (that once again, I missed), I twisted Dave’s arm into sharing his notes on four of the wines. After all, if he’s going to brag about such outstanding wines, why not share them with us? So here we go………….
I had the opportunity to taste an all star lineup of wines with Giancarlo Pacenti in Montalcino recently during our visit with him. You can learn more about this outstanding vintner, his estate and his wines by clicking on to part I and part II of our videos with him as well as here. Here are a couple of his wines, to start.
Domaine Chante Cigale Cotes du Rhone Vielles Vignes, 2007:
For the price of about $20, this is a steal of a classic Cotes du Rhone! Sporting fig and dark plum, currant, notes of spice and black tea, this is a wine that you can enjoy now and probably for the couple of years. Pair with meats, game and mushroom dishes.
Coming off our voyage to Tuscany and Piedmont, it’s hard not to cherry pick four great Italian stars but let’s be fair and give some others a chance. So, here we go………….
I’m readying myself for our whirlwind voyage to Tuscany and Piedmont later this year so it’s a good time for me to do more Italian tasting. In that light, this edition of the Best of the Best includes three wines, each profiling a different Italian grape, namely Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Barbera. The outlier, but certainly not taking a back seat is a local favorite of mine from Kief Manning. So, let’s taste…………..
Every so often, I like to cherry pick a wine review from those who make their livelihood in the vineyards. So I thought it would be fun to share with you one of Kent Callaghan’s wine reviews (www.callaghanvineyards.com). He’s one vintner who prides himself on experiencing the wines of other regions both domestically and internationally. As I learned in his wine tasting session a few weeks back, he really enjoys stretching his palate.
