During our video tour in Tuscany last summer, we were scheduled to meet with Alessandro Landini, owner of Viticcio, and producer of some the region’s finest Chianti and blends. Unfortunately, we were unable to visit but asked Alessandro if he would be kind enough to participate in a written interview with us. Like so many of the current generation vintners, his vineyard management and winemaking techniques reflect the tradition and foundation instilled in him by his father blended with more modern innovative approaches. If you haven’t enjoyed his wines yet, I can vouch first hand for their outstanding quality………….We always have some around.
Q: Alessandro, your father was an engineer and yet undertook tremendous personal financial risks to create a winery. What was it in your father that excited him about the prospect of such a new career?
A: My father was the son of an old style wine producer. After acquiring a degree in engineering in the early 1950’s he immigrated to Venezuela to create a cement factory. Several years later he sold the factory and returned to Italy. With the money he made he was able to purchase the Viticcio property and set up his father as winemaker.

In celebration of first growth Chateau Lafite Rothschild’s new venture in mainland China, the producer is inscribing the Chinese symbol for the figure eight on every standard and magnum bottle. The symbol is considered to be lucky by the Chinese. A spokesperson stated that “The shape of the symbol seems to offer a perfect representation of the slopes of the vineyard and commemorates the launch of our Chinese wine project.” The figure eight is so in demand that residents will pay large sums of money for telephone numbers comprised of only eights. The 2008 Olympics, hosted by China, opened with a ceremony that began precisely at eight minutes and eight seconds past the hour of 8PM on 8/8/08.
Lafite is in partnership with CITIC, China’s largest state owned investment company, to develop 24ha of vines on the Penglai peninsula in the Shandong province.

The answer is when the EU decides to change the rules and the French say NO! On April 27th, the European Commission is expected to approve the production of Rose wine by mixing red and white wines. The French, in their inimitable manner, have threatened to ban such production of what they call “artificial wine,” if the legislation is ratified. France, the worldwide leading Rose producer, fears that wine markets will become tainted with inferior Rose, thus reflecting poorly upon the renown Tavel region. Presently, Rose is produced using red grapes only and then permitting the juice to remain in contact with the skins for a limited period of time, thus producing the pink and refreshing alcoholic drink. This reform has been suggested as a tactic to increase Rose wine production in new and rapidly expanding markets such as China (see News above about Chateau Lafite Rothschild in China).
