Revisiting Some Old Editorials

Monday, December 6th, 2010

On My MindEvery so often, I peer back into some of the old editorials to see how my visions have played out.  It’s always instructive to discover where you were right and where you went astray…………ok……….wrong!

One of my first editorials entitled “Come On Down” written in January ’09 offered the suggestion that it was time to make your wine wish list, with distributors slashing prices almost daily.  I recounted how frequently another “alert” would cross my screen offering a 20% or more discount off of the original price as the world economy continued its spiral into the economic abyss.  With the benefit of hindsight, we now know that this was just a couple of months from the bottom of the equity market plunge and a launch off the pad that catapulted the markets into a historically meteoric rise.  Sometimes, everything seems the darkest before the light.

As it turns out, the suggestion of making a wine wish list was a pretty good call.  Both ’09 and ’10 have offered wonderful opportunities to pick up wines that range from entry level to collectibles and at tempting prices.  I still receive several emails on a daily basis offering another “great deal.”  With the inventory channels  still clogged in many cases and new vintages coming on board, producers and distributors are likely to continue their quest to draw down the stock.  In all likelihood, some of this will translate into continuing discounts while some of the unsold wine will probably find its way into alternatively named wine at lower prices.  Either way, wine enthusiasts won’t have to battle the pricing demons for some time to come.
